✔︎ Bill S-227, Food Day in Canada Act

Voted yea. Bill adopted.

Bill

Bill S-227, An Act to establish Food Day in Canada

Vote

Yea.

Rationale

Supporting this Bill sends the message that the government values connections and trust between consumers and food producers, while also valuing the ability of local food systems to offer a variety of choices to consumers. The government would show it recognizes inequities in food systems across the country and is willing to propose concrete solutions to address them. This Bill fills a void, since no official, federally designated day exists to celebrate the contribution of this sector to Canada.

Passed.

Statement Thanking Kimz Angels

Thank you, Mr. Speaker,

On Wednesday mornings in Langley City, a line forms in front of Langley Vineyard Church. This line includes people struggling with hunger, homelessness, and sometimes mental health issues. Some come for healthcare support, while others come for much needed social contact. Waiting inside to welcome those in need are Kimz Angels.

With over 70 volunteers, Kimz Angels cares for our community’s homeless and hungry populations. These Angels provide food, clothing, housing, and essentials to those who need it, no questions asked. Kimz Angels also support seniors with financial struggles, young girls facing insecurities at school, and single mothers. They champion the importance of making positive impacts on other’s lives.

The giving of furniture, non-perishable food, baby necessities, kids’ toys, school supplies, or shelter changes life stories. All it takes is a community coming together to help give a hand up, and this is what Kimz Angles do, rain or shine, in our community.

I have had the privilege of volunteering with Kimz Angels many times over the years. I have seen the tireless efforts that Kimz Angels make in Langley City. Thank you, Kim Snow and all your angels, for the work you do.

Thank you.

Statement on Cloverdale Rodeo

Mr. Speaker,

Following a 3-year break due to COVID, I’m excited that the Cloverdale Rodeo will once again be taking place from May 19th to 22nd.

Established in 1888, this agricultural fair and exhibition is Canada’s second largest Rodeo event. The Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair was created to encourage the development of agricultural resources in the Fraser Valley of BC. There will also be a variety of western food vendors and a parade of over 1,000 participants, myself included.

From marching bands, to skateboarders, dance groups, and clowns, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Live musicians will play on stage as the surrounding community comes together to share in art, sport, song, and dance. I encourage both British Columbians and those outside the province to come experience our western hospitality. Join me in getting back to country and agriculture at the Cloverdale Rodeo this upcoming May long weekend.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker

Bill

Bill C-248, An Act to amend the Canada National Parks Act (Ojibway National Urban Park of Canada)

Vote

Nay.

Rationale

Parks Canada is already working with the City of Windsor, Caldwell First Nation, Walpole Island First Nation, the Government of Ontario, and other local partners to establish a national urban park in Windsor. Bill C-248 shares our same goal of establishing a national urban park in Windsor, which is why we support it having the opportunity to be studied in the Senate with some recommendations moving forth.

Government of Canada supports electrification of Langley School District’s bus fleet

John Aldag, Member of Parliament for Cloverdale—Langley City statement on $13,800 for SD35 bus fleet

April 24, 2023 – Greenwood, British Columbia

Today, John Aldag, Member of Parliament for Cloverdale—Langley City, announced a federal investment of $13,800 to support the electrification of Langley School District’s bus fleet.

Funding will be used to develop a strategy to transition to zero emission buses (ZEBs) for schools in Langley. The project includes assessing the existing bus fleet, developing a roadmap to zero emission, determining maintenance and operational needs, establishing costs, and developing an implementation and roll-out plan.

This investment will help Langley contribute to Canada’s objective of reaching net-zero by 2050 by providing comfortable, and clean transit to students.

By investing in public transit infrastructure, the Government of Canada is growing our country’s economy, increasing the resiliency of our communities, and improving the lives of Canadians.

“Investing in zero emission transit infrastructure is essential for building the sustainable communities of tomorrow. That's why we are working with the Langley School District to help transition Langley school buses to zero emission vehicles. The Government of Canada will continue to collaborate with partners to invest in projects like this one that bring us one step closer to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 and building a stronger, healthier Canada. Thank you to the Langley School District for partnering with us on this fantastic project that will benefit our students and members of our community in Langley City and the Township of Langley.” – John Aldag, Member of Parliament for Cloverdale – Langley City

✘ Bill C-239 (Provincial Tax Agreements)

Voted nay. Bill defeated.

Bill

Bill C-239, An Act to amend An Act to authorize the making of certain fiscal payments to provinces, and to authorize the entry into tax collection agreements with provinces

Vote

Nay.

Rationale

If this Bill passes as is, it could jeopardize the jobs of more than 7,000 employees in rural parts of Quebec, where good federal jobs have previously been inaccessible. Moving to a single tax return would also effectively end the CRA’s ability to effectively administer benefits in the province such as the CCB, GSC, and COVID-like benefit programs if any were ever needed in the future. A single tax administration by Quebec would require Canada to negotiate and enter into new international arrangements. Our international partners may not welcome or be prepared to interact with two separate administrations. These challenges could impact Canada’s ability to combat international tax evasion and meet its legal obligations under international tax agreements.

Statement on Vaisakhi

Thank you Mr. Speaker,

Sikhs across the world and across Canada are preparing to gather to celebrate Vaisakhi. The celebration of Vaisakhi marks the founding of the community of baptized Sikhs, known as Khalsa Panth. This year, the celebration is held on April 14th.

Canada is the home of one of the world’s largest Sikh diasporas. More than 500,000 Canadians of the Sikh faith have helped make our country what it is today.

The vibrant festival of Vaisakhi is a spring harvest festival marking the Solar New Year for Sikhs and Hindus. Vaisakhi is also a time to reflect on the importance of upholding justice and promoting equality. Let us celebrate together the importance of the Sikh community within Cloverdale-Langley City, across Surrey, and across Canada as well. Please join me at the Surrey Vaisakhi Parade on April 22nd!

I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all those celebrating this special occasion a very happy Vaisakhi.
